Glamorous Garbage Book Review

*This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my Disclosure Page for details.

I have two children who love to collect things. Seriously these children could be on an episode of hoarders.  Whenever I help them clean their rooms (which isn't often) I find the strangest stuff and of course I cannot get rid of said stuff because to the kids they are treasures. My daughter collects sticks, rocks, shells, ticket stubs and animal bones...weird right. My son collects bottle caps, Lego bricks, Lego mini-figures and cars. So when I was contacted to review the book "Glamorous Garbage" I just couldn't resist. This book was definitely written specifically for my hoarders...I mean children.

A moms review:
Glamorous Garbage is a non-fiction story that teaches children how to tackle a really messy room by reducing, reusing and redecorating!

Glamorous Garbage is a great story for children ages 5-8 years old. It is a 40 page hardcover book written and illustrated by Barbara Johansen Newman who is very passionate about collecting herself....here's a peek of her house from her blog. The story is about two cousins, Bobbie and Joanie, and focuses on Bobbie and her love for collecting stuff....she just can't resist a garage sale and has a really hard time letting stuff go. One day Joanie comes to visit Bobbie and has a hard time finding somewhere to play in Bobbies room...not only is it full of stuff, it is a little dangerous too. Bobbie's mom decides it's time for an intervention and gives her two weeks to clear out the clutter. So Bobbie comes up with the perfect plan to turn her room into a "glamorous big kids room."

Bobbie shows her "glamorous big kid room plan" to her mom but her mom tells her that they cannot buy new things for her room right now....so Bobbie comes up with an alternate plan. Bobbie starts bringing home more garbage and junk from the swap shed and her mom and Joanie begin to get worried.  After all the idea was to get a cleaner more organized room not a more cluttered one.  One day while Bobbie and Joanie are playing they get into a fight after Joanie looses her favorite toy. Bobbie finally realizes that her room must get cleaned up or her best cousin may never come over to play again, but the deadline is approaching fast, so she decides it's time to ask her mom for help.

Bobbie's mom helps her make 3 piles: keep-it, fix-it-up, and time-to-go. Then her mom helps her turn a lot of her trash into new treasures that she can actually utilize. She even manages to let go of old toys which was the hardest part to deal with but still made her the queen of yard sales.

The illustrations in the book are adorable and very bright and colorful.

Both of my children loved the book and have asked for me to read it to them several times. It has also encouraged us to finally start our keepsake shadowbox collages which can hang on the wall and proudly display small treasures.

About the Author and Illustrator:
After majoring in fine art and education in college, Barbara Johansen Newman switched gears to spend the next ten years as a puppeteer and doll artist, performing in and around the Buffalo area with her husband and exhibiting at fine craft fairs and in galleries throughout the US. In 1982, after moving to Boston, she returned to her first love of drawing and became an illustrator, creating many editorial illustrations for magazines and newspapers across the country. Raising her three sons reignited a love for children's books, sparking a change of direction in 1999. She has been illustrating and writing books for the young at heart ever since. She also designs fabrics for the sewing industry. When not writing, illustrating or designing, Barbara can be found rummaging in countless flea markets, antique shops, and thrift stores (and even the dump), ever on the hunt, looking to add fantastic finds to an already enormous collection of vintage bric-a-brac and priceless junk. Her motto: "Less is never more, and more is never enough." You can read more about Barbara and her escapades on her website.

Guatemalan Sawdust Carpets Craft

*This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my Disclosure Page for details.

For the last few weeks we have been working on our Guatemala geography fair project. This year we decided to make our board very 3 dimensional. So we have been hard at work coming up with fun projects for our display. In a few weeks I will share our entire board as well as the books and resources we utilized and some of the other craft projects we did. If you missed it be sure to check out our Guatemalan weaving project.

This project was sparked by a book we read called Sawdust Carpets by Amelia Lau Carling and a recent fieldtrip to Home Depot. I remembered that during our Home Depot fieldtrip tour someone (maybe it was me) asked what is done with all of the sawdust they collect after cutting wood for customers. To my surprise they said they just throw it out...surely there must be something you can do with sawdust. Well guess what there is!

About the book:
The book was terrific and both children really enjoyed it.  The story is about a Chinese family living in Guatemala who is invited to spend Easter with their cousins in Antigua. Every Easter Antigua puts on a spectacular Easter procession. During the procession there are beautiful statues, (which are a spectacular example of Spanish colonial art) that are carried during the procession by hundreds of penitents and wreathed in incense. And there are striking, intricate, sawdust carpets created on the cobblestone streets which the processions walk over and ultimately destroy.  Guatemalans spend days creating these spectacular works of art using colored sawdust, fruit and flowers only to see them disappear within seconds. The main character becomes very sad when she realizes the sawdust carpet she and her cousins helped create will be ruined...until a neighbor explains, "This is the custom. We make the rugs as offerings to life." Two days later, on Easter Sunday, the carpet makers and the little girl begin planning their designs for the next year's procession. The book was a great way to teach the children about not only Guatemalan religious traditions, but also some Chinese religious traditions. We learned about the Goddess Kuan Yin, the Virgen de Guadalupe, Dragon Boat Races, Easter processions, pinatas, baptisms, Chinese tamales and more. I highly recommend it if you are learning about Guatemalan, Chinese or Central American cultures.

Sawdust Carpets craft instructions:

Supplies:
  • Piece of sturdy paper (we used poster board which we cut into 8 1/2 x 11 pieces)
  • Sawdust - make a trip to Home Depot or Lowes and ask them for a bag of sawdust. You may get a weird look but when you explain the project you are creating I am sure they will graciously give you a bag.
  • Food coloring
  • White glue
  • Pencil
  • Foam or plastic cups
  • Plastic spoon
  • Paint brush
  • Optional: flower petals, pine needles and flour  (these are other materials that are used to create sawdust carpets in Guatemala)

Instructions:
  1. Takes several cups and fill them about half way with sawdust.
  2. Add several drops of food coloring to each cup and stir until the sawdust is completely colored. We used about 10-15 drops per cup.
  3. Create a picture/design on the poster board with a pencil.
  4. Add glue to a section of the picture and smear it with a brush or finger.
  5. Then add the colored sawdust onto the glue (just like glitter).
  6. Keep adding sawdust to the picture/design until it is completely covered.
*See the photos above for examples.

Sit back and enjoy the beautiful sawdust carpet creations which can be hung on the wall rather than being destroyed.

What The Balman Kids Wanna Be When They Grow Up

*This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my Disclosure Page for details.

We had tons of fun with the Poppins Book Nook blog series last year and we will be continuing that fun all throughout 2014. This month's theme was, "What Will I Be When I Grow Up!" Keep reading to learn more about the books we read and crafts we made. There is also a giveaway is at the end of the post! To check out all of our past Poppins Book Nook posts click here.

Books:
If there is one thing my children can do it is dream big. Both of them are very passionate and already have made up their minds what they want to be when they grow up. They even have blogs they have started which are dedicated to their passions. Gwyn's blog can be viewed here and Rowyn's blog can be viewed here. Gwyn wants to own a farm and rescue animals, especially horses. She also wants to be an artist which will help fund her rescue. Rowyn wants to be a Lego Master Builder. So the two books we read were Hurry and The Lego Ideas Book.

Hurry is a beautifully illustrated book about a little girl who helps her grandparents with the hay harvest on their farm. But while the hay is drying the sky begins to turn dark and they begin to fear the worst. If the rain gets the hay wet the entire crop will spoil and the horses would not have anything to eat. Will Nora, Gramp and Gram be able to harvest the hay and get it safely to the barn before the rain comes?

The Lego Ideas Book is one of Rowyns favorite. It is loaded with over 500 building ideas. The book is divided into six themed chapters — transportation, buildings, space, kingdoms, adventure, and useful makes — each with basic templates of key models and spreads to inspire you to create your own. It is perfect for any child who is addicted to Lego Bricks.

We had a very busy month and a fun 8 day South Georgia Adventure so I sort of dropped the ball this month and totally forgot to pick up pirate themed books at the library. Native American Folktale, Flute Craft And A Giveaway

*This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my Disclosure Page for details.

We had tons of fun with the Poppins Book Nook blog series last year and we will be continuing that fun all throughout 2014. This month's theme was, "Folktales" Keep reading to learn more about the books we read and fun crafts we made. There is also a giveaway is at the end of the post!

Books:
Gwyn is fascinated with Native Americans and it is one topic that she is constantly exploring. Earlier this month we attended the Mothers Day Powwow in Canton, GA. This event is held every year and is one that we try not to miss. There are arts and crafts, tasty foods, tepees, demonstrations, dancing, music and warriors on horseback.

So it comes as no surprise that the kids picked out a Native American folktale book for this months book club. Night Dancer is a lyrical picture book poem about Kokopelli a southwestern Native American God. The book is 32 pages and great for children of all ages. In the book Kokopelli, the god of dance and music travels through the desert at night playing his flute and inviting the desert animals to join him. Along the way Coyote, Snake, Tortoise, Javelina, Jackrabbit, Tarantula, and the children of the Rio Grande Pueblo village follow Kokopelli and join his midnight dance.

Craft Project:
Here is the fun project we did to go along with this months theme.

Straw pan flutes:

Materials:
-8-10 Straws (larger straws like the ones from McDonalds will probably work better)
-Tape
-Scissors

What to do:
There are a few ways you can make these and we opted for the easier way, but if you want to work in some math you can have children measure out the straws to these measurements 3-1/2 inches, 4 inches, 4-1/4 inches, 4-3/4 inches, 5 inches, 5-1/4 inches, 5-3/4 inches, 6 inches

1. Have children line up 8-10 straws. The straws should form steps and each one should be about 1/2 inch shorter than one before.
2. Next place a piece of tape on the table and lay the straws onto the tape. After all of the straws are placed onto the tape take the ends of the tape and fold them over the straws to secure them together.
3. Finally cut one side so that the straws are straight across and even.
4. Blow gently across the flat side to make some pretty sounds.

Let the children experiment with the straws adding more or less, cutting different lengths, etc. It is tons of fun and a great lesson in music!

Unbelievable Presidents - February Poppins Book Nook And A Giveaway

*This post contains affiliate links. Please see my Disclosure Page for details.

PoppinsBookNook

We are having lots of fun with the Poppins Book Nook blog series and we will be continuing that fun all throughout 2014. Be on the lookout for the 2014 themes! This month's theme was Presidents. Keep reading to learn more about the President books we read, fun crafts we made and grab your FREE myth journal page too. The giveaway is at the end of the post!

President Journal Page:
Here is a President Journal Page I made which goes along with this months theme. Download your copy here or click the picture below. The kids had a lot of fun with this journal page.

Books:
We read several books including So You Want To Be President, Vote and President Adams Alligator.

Craft Projects:
Gwyn came up with our President craft. I am fairly certain the idea came from one of her favorite movies Night At The Museum....remember the bobble head Einsteins? Well here is our President Bobble Head craft.

President Bobble Head
First decide what President or other person you are going to make. My kids decided to even make bobble head pets.

Materials:
-Plastic container (we used a spice container and pill bottle)
-Felt
-Hair
-Foam ball (we didn't have balls so I just used a piece of flat foam and molded it into a ball)
-Buttons
-Markers
-Hot glue
-Scissors
-Any other fun items you made need for embellishments

What to do:
1. Glue a pipe cleaner onto the back of the container for the arms. Length will vary depending on the size of your bottle.
2. Design the head. Use markers, pipe cleaners for glasses, doll hair for hair, mustaches and beards, etc.
3. Stick a pipe cleaner into the bottom of the foam ball. Twist it to resemble a spring about 3 times. Glue the other end to the top of the bottle.
4. Now it is time to dress your bobble head (this part can be tedious). You will basically want to cut two pieces of felt, one for the front and one for the back of the shirt. In our case the President's were wearing suit jackets so we glued a piece of white felt to the front of the bottle and cut a "V" shape out of the front piece of felt. Again the size of the felt rectangles will depend on the size of your bottle. After you get the front and back pieces glued on you will want to cut the felt around the bottom of the arms and glue the pieces together to make the sleeves, then glued down the sides of the shirt.
5. Add final details such as buttons on the shirt, decals, ties/bow ties, etc.
6. Now watch them bobble!

Meet Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt!
