This month for the Moms of MasterBooks we reviewed Bugs Big & Small God Made Them All! Below is my review about the books as well as further details about this months Facebook party.
A moms review:
My children love bugs, so much so that we actually have a bug specimen board and a family of Madagascar Cockroaches (we have 4 adults and about 35 babies). So you can imagine how excited they were when this book arrived at our door. They immediately grabbed the book and began flipping through the pages before I even had a chance to look at it. This is what I heard next, "Wow, no way, mom come look at how cool this bug is." This informational, hardback book is 80 pages of buggy fun. It was written by Will Zinke who was homeschooled and now homeschools his own children. He is passionate about insects and holds a BS in biology. The book is broken into 6 sections: Amazing Creepy Crawlers, Jumbo Giants, Weird & Wonderful, Bugs in Camo, Bizarre and Beautiful and Words To Know. The full-color, glossy photographs are absolutely wonderful and incredibly detailed.
This book is great for children of all ages. Children will learn about where each bug lives, their body parts, how they got their names and more. Vocabulary and bug names are super easy for children to find because they are written in bold text and highlighted in light green. Throughout the book there are "Creepy Cool" purple triangles that provide interesting facts on various bugs. Like did you know that a Large toothed longhorn beetle spends up to 10 years of its life in the larva stage? In the back of the book there is a page with multiple bug related scriptures, a glossary of "Words to Know," and removable bug flashcards.
One of my favorite things about this book is that it highlights the beauty and incredible design of insects. All those stereotypes about bugs being dirty and gross will be completely eliminated after reading Bugs Big and Small!

We love all of the books in The Answers Book For Kids series (yes we own them all) and Volume 5 and Volume 6 are no exception. If your children are anything like mine they are full of questions. And if you are anything like me you don't have the answer to every question! That is where the answers books come in! The Answers Book For Kids help parents answer your children's important questions using the Biblical truths.
The books in the series include:
-Vol 1 - Questions on Creation and the Fall
-Vol 2 - Questions on Dinosaurs and the Flood of Noah
-Vol 3 - Questions on God and the Bible
-Vol 4 - Questions on Sin , Salvation and the Christian Life
-Vol 5 - Questions on Space and Astronomy
-Vol 6 - Questions on Babel and the Ice Age
Each books are 6 x 6 hardcover books and contain 20-22 questions FROM kids around the World! The books are written by Ken Ham and Bodie Hodge! Each book features colorful images, faith based questions, amazing biblical answers and scripture to help back up the answers! The books are written in a easy to read style and are appropriate for children ages 6-12 years old (but younger children could also benefit).
We are teaching our children about faith, the Bible and that there is a God, but we don't currently attend a Church. However I grew up going to church 2-3 times a week. One of the things that always frustrated me with Church as both a child and adult was that my tough questions were blown off and not answered. Often times I was told in not so many words that my questions were a sin. Yup apparently I wasn't allowed to question things like the dinosaurs, biblical events (like Babel, The Great Flood), the Ice Age or aliens. And forget about having any kind of debate over an question. As I got older my questions got more difficult and eventually I stopped attending church because of the hypocrisy. I by all means don't have all the answers and am no expert on the Bible. So as a parent having resources like The Answers Book For Kids series really helps me when my kids have a tough question. We encourage our children to think for themselves and be open minded but in order for them to fully do that we need to arm them with ALL of the information. Now they can get the Biblical Truth answers too in a very quick, easy to understand way!

Is it possible that there are living things in space?
What about the big bang?
Babel and the Ice Age Book Question Examples:
Where was the Tower of Babel built?
How many languages came from Babel?

Spring and Summer = BABIES!
Everywhere we look new life is emerging.
About 4 weeks ago I wrote about Investigating Nature. In the post I had mentioned the Carolina Wrens that built a nest on our balcony in an ice cream pail. Over the last 4 weeks we have been watching and observing them. It took them several days to build their beautiful dome shaped nest. They very carefully placed each leaf and twig to make it the perfect home for their babies. They didn't seem to mind us watching out the window (which made us very happy).
After the nest was built we kept an eye on it, patiently waiting for eggs to hopefully arrive. A few days later there were 4 little cream eggs with brown speckles. We took a peek at them, being very careful to not disturb the nest. Mamma bird was very diligent and did a fabulous job taking care of her eggs. She made sure they were nice and warm and didn't mind us checking in occasionally on her and taking some pictures. About 13 days later 3 little fuzzy pink and grey babies were hatched. Yes sadly one of the babies did not make it. The kids were in complete awe of these new little lives. They grew quickly and each day we could see changes taking place. First their eyes opened. then they began developing feathers. They constantly cried for food and their parents did a great job of going back and forth with food. We noticed that their was one baby who was larger and more dominant than the others. Yesterday, about 11 days since they hatched, the first baby (the dominant one) left the nest and entered the World. We saw him outside of the nest on the ledge of the container and by the time I grabbed my camera he was off. The kids got to see him take his first flight! It was a fabulous experience for our entire family!

This months Moms of MasterBooks book was Big Book Of Earth & Sky. Below is my review about the book as well as further details about this months Facebook party. To read more reviews visit the NLPG Blog.
A moms review:
As the title suggests this book is BIG, it's 15 feet long!!!! And it is loaded with fabulous information about the Earth! Everything from the Earth's atmosphere to the Earth's core is covered in these 21 brightly colored panels. Each panel is 9 x 141/4. You can fold out the panels and use them on the floor or you can do what we did which is hang the panels on the wall...well the first 10 anyway which include all the information above the Earth's surface. Things like the Earth's atmosphere, greenhouse gases, clouds, mountains, volcanoes, precipitation. water cycles, caves and more are covered.
The bottom panels (which start at your baseboard and continue on the floor) take your family on a journey below the Earth's surface. Things like caves, ocean zones, oil, dirt, rocks and more are covered. For these panels you will start at the Intertidal Zone (0 ft the surface) and continue your journey below the Earth all the way to the Hadalpelagic Zone (35,813 ft deep ocean trenches).
Many questions like, "Where do you find the ozone layer?, Where does lava come from?" as well as many others will be answered in this book.
We really enjoyed using this book for our science studies. We recently learned all about weather and sea mammals and took a field trip to Ruby Falls which is a cave in TN, so this book was a great way to reinforce what we had learned about over the last few months. Volcanoes is the next topic on my son's list so I know we will be using this book next month.
There is a great teachers guide available for this book which you can either purchase from the NLP website or download for FREE.
This book is great for children of all ages (my 5 and 7 yr old loved it) and adults too. The publisher's recommended ages are 7-12.

I is for Investing nature!!
Do your kids love investigating nature? Mine do. And Spring is a great time to start. New life is springing up everywhere. Bees are buzzing, flowers are blooming, birds are nesting and butterflies are emerging. So get your kids outdoors and do some investigating.
Right now we are investigating the Carolina Wrens that are building a nest on our balcony in a 1 gallon ice cream pale and the Eastern Tent Caterpillar that is currently in his cocoon in our butterfly habitat.

We love to get out and explore nature. During the Spring and Summer months which are quickly approaching, YAY, we go out at least once a week to explore our beautiful World which God created.
When we go on a nature walk we explore, journal, touch, research, geocache and take lots of photos. Check out our photos to see why we love nature walks so much. These were all taken on one adventure to a local nature center called Autrey Mill. We have been studying Marine Mammals for the last several weeks. This includes Manatees, Whales, and Dolphins. We have been learning so many wonderful things about these majestic creatures. The Blue Whale is the largest creature in the entire World (it's even bigger than any dinosaur that ever lived). So how is it possible that this creature could have evolved from a land dwelling animal? One fabulous resource that I recently received from Master Books is called "If Animals Could Talk." Dr. Werner Gitt is the author and shares some fabulous facts about Creation and animals from an animals view. It just so happens that there is an entire chapter entitled "Fountains For Fingerprints" which gives some great information Creation and Whales. With this book I was able to provide my children with the facts that prove Whales were given special capabilities and special characteristics by our Creator that you won't find anywhere else in the animal Kingdom. They did not evolve from a creature with legs like many science books claim.
I captured this photo of Maris one of the Beluga that lives at GA Aquarium. She was pregnant in this photo and gave birth May 18, 2012. Sadly the baby died a few days later due to a complicated birth.

My daughter has a love for horses that is beyond words. Horses have always fascinated her and she dreams of owning a farm/animal rescue when she's an adult. This year we began volunteering a local horse rescue. This has provided her with a fabulous opportunity to not only spend time with horses and learn how to care for them, but also learn a valuable lesson in helping others. She will be starting horseback lessons very soon too which she is thrilled about.

I know your
thinking Rats, EWWW! But these creatures are indeed one of Gods
creations and therefore amazing. However did you know that rats are one
of the animals not mentioned in the Bible at all? Mice are mentioned
several times and it is quite possible that some of these mice were
indeed rats because even through the Middle Ages people thought rats
were just big mice. Now I know there are wild rats and pet rats and
nobody likes critters in your home when they are not invited but
nonetheless they are living creatures and deserve respect. Perhaps
learning a bit more about rats will change your thoughts about these
amazing furry creatures.

This month we have been studying mythology. One particular animal that comes up quite often in ever culture is the Dove. There are 310 species of Doves and Pigeons who belong to the same bird family of Columbidaes. Doves are used in a variety of settings as symbols of love, peace or as messengers. Doves appear in the symbology of Judaism and Christianity and of both military and pacifist groups.
