Daria Music Cancioncitas De Los Andes Review and Giveaway

*This post contains affiliate links. Please see my Disclosure Page for details.

daria and drum

Last year I found a fabulous music website called Daria Music. Daria has lots of great resources for parents and teachers! She has lots of great freebies and giveaways as well. In January I reviewed one of Daria's CD's, I Have A Dream and fell even more in love with her products. Daria has a NEW CD I would like to tell you about called Cancioncitas De Los Andes (Little Songs Of The Andes). There is also a great giveaway at the end of this post.

A moms review:
Daria was kind enough to send our family the A Childs Life In The Andes (CD plus Companion Book) to review. I downloaded the files very easily and placed them into my Dropbox App so I could easily pull them up on my phone or tablet. This worked out great for our family since we are always on the go. We listened to the songs many times on our car rides.

As with all of Daria's music the songs were fabulous. The 6 songs included on the CD used traditional Andes instruments, had great beats and were very inspirational.

The CD is fabulous and includes the following songs:
-El Condor Pasa
-Papel De Plata
-Alturas
-Valicha
-Surphy
-Yaw Yaw Puka Polleracha

About halfway through Gwyn (my 7 year old) asked, "Mom what culture are the songs from." That was music to this mom ears. That definitely told me that the music was resonating with her and she knew that the songs were not songs we listen to everyday. She knew there was something different about them by the words being spoken, instruments being used, etc.

This was one of the kids favorite songs. Gwyn loved the pan flute. She said the song reminded her of a tribal dance.

The corresponding digital book is a MUST. Remember Gwyns question? Well the eBook helped us learn more about the Andean culture. There is lots of information included in the eBook which is broken down into 8 sections.

-Section 1 - learn about the Andes Mountains and where they are. There are a couple of great maps included which really help children visual exactly how far the Andes are from where you live.
-Section 2 - learn more about each of the songs and what they are about.
-Section 3 - learn about the various instruments including the Quenas, Zamponas, Chapchas, Rainsticks, Bombo, Guitar and more.
-Section 4 - learn about what an Andes child's life is like.
-Section 5 - learn more about the animals of the Andes. My children really enjoyed learning all about Llamas, Alpacas and Vicunas.
-Section 6 - learn all about the food of the Andes. Did you know Guinea Pigs (or Cuy) are eaten as a special treat or delicacy.
-Section 7 - learn some Spanish and Quechua. Spanish is the primary language however  in remote areas Quechua a language dating all the way back to the Incan empire is spoken. The songs on the CD are mostly spoken in Quechua or Runa Simi.
-Section 8 - my children's favorite part includes coloring pages, activity sheets, instrument making directions. We were able to easily utilize these via Drop Box as well by opening the pdf in qPDF. This App allows you to make edits directly on the pdf and save them as well. This set up made it very easy for us to use the activity pages without having to print anything.

Cancioncitas De Los Andes - CD and E-Book Combo

This is definitely a CD that you will listen to over and over again with your children. It is a great resource to not only use with music lessons but also geography and history.

Each month Daria has a monthly song page which has lots of freebies including songs, links to printables, videos, instrument making how-to's and more. There is also always at least one great giveaway (many times more).

Make your own rainstick:
My children love music. They love listening to music, making music and dancing to music. They also love making their own instruments. If you need some ideas I encourage you to visit Daria's Music Craft Page. I also have 10 Easy/Inexpensive Instruments To Make With Your Kids.

I encourage you to make rainsticks with your children. They were lots of fun and easy to make!

Materials:
-Paper towel tube or other long tube
-Aluminum foil
-Small dried beans, rice, pasta, etc
-Glue
-Scissors
-Paper
-Crayons, markers glitter, etc

What to do:
Decorate your tube as desired. Next make a circle by tracing around your tube onto a piece of  paper, make 2 of these. Draw a bigger circle around that circle and then cut several spokes between the two circles. Glue the spokes onto one end of the tub to make a cap. Cut a piece of aluminum foil about one and half times the length of your tube and about 6 inches wide. Crunch it to make a long snake like shape then twist the foil into a spring shape. Put the foil into the tube. Next pour in some rices, pasta or beans. Fill the tube only about 1/10. Have fun and experiment to see how different amounts and different types of beans, etc change the sound. Take the remaining circle and glue the spokes onto the other end of the tube to cap it. I found that tape was a lot more secure for affixing the circles to the ends.  Now have fun and make some music!

Here is a video of the kids telling you about their rainsticks and then playing them:

Gwyns (7 yrs old) and Rowyn (6 yrs old) Review:
Gwyn, "We had fun learning about the Andes, listening to songs and making instruments. My favorite song was the flute one (Yaw Yaw) and the Condor."

Rowyn, "I liked the music. My favorite song was Papel. It neat instruments."

10 Easy/Inexpensive Instruments To Make With Your Kids

Image(s): FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Do your kids enjoy music? Mine do! And they enjoy making their instruments even more.

10 easy/inexpensive instruments to make with your kids..

1) Zither - you can make a Zither (or guitar like instrument) using a box or container and some rubber bands.
2) Shekere - the real way to make a Shekere is to dry out a gourd, cut off the top and remove the insides. Then create a net by using beads and twine/nylon string. This YouTube video is very helpful for explaining how to do the beading. But if you don't have a gourd (and don't wish to purchase a kit) you can still make a Shekere using an empty milk jug, instructions can be found on Daria Music.
3) Maracas - simply place a small amount of rice or beans into a plastic egg or vitamin container (virtually any container will work but these are the two types I prefer). For safety reasons tape or glue the plastic egg together or lid onto the container. Then decorate as desired.
4) Tambourine - take a paper plate and fold it in half. Staple around the edges but leave a little space open at the top to add beans or rice, then finish stapling. Decorate as desired and ta-da you have a Tambourine.
5) Drum - take any container and transform it into a drum. We like to use oatmeal containers because the lids make a perfect noise when you beat on them. If you wish to create a drum more similar to a Native American drum you can stretch a piece of vinyl, leather, suede or fake skin over the top of the container. And if you want a more percussion sounding drum you can use a metal can like a coffee can and beat on the bottom.
6) Didgeridoo - we have a real didgeridoo that I picked up on my trip to Australia in 1998. But I don't generally like the kids playing with it too much because it is heavy a special keepsake. So they made their own. All you need is a long tube of some sort like a wrapping paper tube, mailing tube or a piece of PVC tube. Let the kids decorate it any way they choose then have fun learning to play it.
7) Guiro -  find a plastic bottle or can with ridges, take off the wrapper decorate the outside. Then fill the bottle with something like beans, rice or popcorn kernels. Secure the lid with glue for safety. Use an unsharpened pencil or chop stick to rub on the Guiro.
8) Cymbals - take two metal bottlecaps, put a hole in the center of each cap and then put a piece of yarn through each side and knot in place. Decorate the caps as desired. You can find more detailed instructions on Daria Music.
9) Spin Drum - we have one of these that we bought at a Native American event but I found these great, simple instructions on how to make your own, here. This is definitely a instrument that we will be making soon (since my kids fight over the 1 we have).
10) Washboard - here is another one on my to do list. Make a simple washboard instrument using a piece of corrugated cardboard. Follow these instructions.

Now you are ready to have a family band!

Daria Music - I Have A Dream CD Review and Giveaway

daria and drum

Have you heard of Daria Music? I stumbled upon her website while searching for music learning resources and fell in love with her website and music. She has a fabulous voice and all her songs are amazing and very inspirational. My favorite thing about Daria's music is that she introduces children to music from around the World. She incorporates different languages, musical instruments, people, places, etc into all her songs so children experience more than just simply listening to a song. She also encourages parents and teachers to create your own instruments so you can play and sing along too. You can read more about Daria and her travels around the World on her bio page. Oh and she even has a page for homeschoolers with some great information!!!

I Have a Dream CD

A moms review:
Daria was kind enough to send our family the "I Have A Dream" CD to review (be sure to click the link to listen to sample songs). The day it arrived my kids were eager to listen to it. Now I don't know about you but sometimes children's music drives me crazy. Much of the music today forchildren is not very original, annoying, teaches nothing of importance...know what I mean? Well Dari's music is none of the above. Actually I don't even mind listening to the CD by myself (which I did while I wrote this review).

The CD is about 26 minutes long and features 10 great songs. Many of the songs on the CD are very spiritual and have great meaning to them. The CD jacket features a really cool illustration actually done by an 8 yr old girl. Inside the jacket are all the words to the songs along with brief information about the songs origin and the instruments that were used. The songs on "I Have A Dream" will teach children important values such as being kind to others, love, respect for people and animals, service, peace, equality and more. Obviously, hence the name, there is a song about Martin Luther King  which is the main reason I chose this CD to review. It is a great song to listen to this month as we are approach Martin Luther King Day.  Martin Luther Kind Day is such an important day to teach our children about. So much can be learned from this amazing man and what better way than through a spiritual, uplifting song. There are also songs on the CD in Spanish. Hebrew and Zulu.

There is also an amazing song called "Ride, Horse, Ride" which is my favorite as well as Gwyn's. This song uses traditional Native American Instruments like a Pueblo drum, Native flute, shell rattles and Iroquois bone rattles. The song even has a Clan Mother (Red Singing Bird) doing some of the vocals and instrument playing. Gwyn is fascinated with the Native American culture and horses so this song really captured Gwyn's heart. She immediately knew it was a Native American song and what instruments they were playing. The song teaches children about respecting animals as well as learning and being encouraged from them. I also really enjoyed the African/American spirituals.

And it turns out this CD will go along great with our unit study this month too, on Marine Mammals. There is a song called "Wild and Free" which is about dolphins, whales and manatees. This song is about protecting our wildlife and is sung to the tune of "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean".

This is definitely a CD that you will listen to over and over again with your children.

The CD is fabulous and includes the following songs:
-I Have A Dream
-Here Come Our Mothers
-Beautiful Rainbow World
-Heyvenu Shalom Alechim/Hava Nagila
-For All The World's Children
-La Cucaracha
-Wild And Free
-Ride, Horse, Ride
-Child Of God
-The Spirit Song

Each month Daria has a monthly song page which has lots of freebies including songs, links to printables, videos, instrument making how-to's and more. There is also always at least one great giveaway (many times more).

Daria has these FREE links (as well as others) right now on her monthly song page for the MLK Day:

-I HAVE A DREAM song - Lyric Sheet
-I HAVE A DREAM song - Sheet Music

And here is a great video for you viewing pleasure as well:

Gwyns review (6 yrs old):
The dolphin song and horse ride songs were my favorite. I like all the different instruments in the songs. We listen to the CD a lot in the car. I hope mommy gets more of the CDs for us to listen too and some more instruments too.
