A little over a week ago our homeschool group had our very first geography fair. Each family that wished to participate picked a different country. There were about 20 families that joined the fun and we had a little over a month to prepare our projects.
Our family chose to do Australia which is country, continent and island all rolled into one. I had visited this amazing country in 1998 with People to People Student Ambassadors so I had lots of great photos, souvenirs and books that we could utilize for our project. My kids were super excited to get to work. For weeks all I heard was, "mom when is the geography fair?"
I dug out my keepsake box and gathered photos and souvenirs from my adventure to the "Land Down Under." This was the first time I had shown the kids ALL of my treasures and photos from my trip. They loved looking through my keepsake box and were full of questions. I think we spent about a day just looking through and talking about my travels.
Next we visited the library to check out some books on Australia. We checked out story books and informational books. After reading our books and becoming experts on Australia we were ready to get to work on our display board.
I went online and printed up a map of Australia, the Australian flag, Australian crest and the Australian country bird, flower and animal. We also included a photo of the prime minister (Julia Gillard) and of course a photo of a famous homeschooling family (The Irwins). I printed everything in black and white so the kids could color them in...really making the project their own.
We invited some of our good friends over to have a project day. Our friends chose St. Lucia as their family's country. The kids all had a great time working together on their projects. It was really cute watching them encourage each other and compliment each other.
And well no homeschooling unit study is complete if we don't have some fun with Lego's. Sometimes the only way I can get Rowyn involved is to include Lego's so I gave him the task of helping us build the Sydney Opera House. The kids also wanted to add the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
As we were working on our project I couldn't help but notice it looked like a giant lapbook...so I thought why not use lapbook pieces on our board for all of our facts? I contacted my favorite lapbooking company A Journey Through Learning and asked if we could review the Australia lapbook by utilizing it on our display board.
A Journey Through Learning geography lapbooks for all 7 Continents, Canada, the 50 States as well as one that can be utilized with any country. The downloadable lapbook is $11.00. I really love how well the lapbook worked on our display board. The reading material that is included was fabulous. There were lapbooking pieces related to Geography and Climate, Regions, Government, People, Major Ethic Groups, Language, Religion, Animals, Holidays and Traditions, Foods, and Craft Ideas. I loved how well all the pieces went with our board and how they added an interactive three dimensional aspect to our display board. During the geography fair it was lots of fun watching the kids flip and unfold the lapbook pieces to read what my kids had written about Australia.
After getting our printouts, lapbook pieces and photos placed on the board it was time to embellish it with some souvenirs and stickers.
And no geography fair project would be complete without some authentic food from the country. I had intended to make some pavlova (Australia's national dessert) with the kids...but we ran out of time. Luckily there is a great little place called the Australian Bakery Cafe in Marietta, GA. So we placed an order for 10 individual pavlovas, we also ate some lunch while we were there and picked up some Vegemite. The kids loved their meat pies and pavlova!
I also created an Australian YouTube channel with lots of great videos all about Australia.
Our FULL display the day of the geography fair. I can definitely say we will be doing more projects like this even if there is no geography fair to show them off at. Creating this project gave the kids a fun, hands on opportunity to learn about a different country and culture. It took learning beyond the textbook. I don't know they will ever get to visit Australia (though I really hope they do), so for now we will learn all we can about the World and people around us.
And here are some photos of all the other families wonderful projects. I love how each one was unique. There were display boards, videos, salt dough maps, music, yummy treats, pictures and some families even dressed up.
And to enhance the learning experience even more I made my kids their very own passports. I used this FREE passport printable from Guest Hollow. I laminated the front and back cover to make it sturdy. And on inside the kids filled out their passports and pasted a photo of themselves. At the geography fair they wrote or drew pictures in their passports as they visited each country. I was very pleased with how these turned out and even more pleased at how great the kids did with filling them in. Even Rowyn who hates writing enjoyed copying the countries into his passport.
So have you ever participated in a geography fair?

"Scrapbooking with and educational twist!"
A moms review:
We received 3 great downloadable lapbooks and 1 unit study from A Journey Through Learning, Letters, Numbers and Shapes (ages 3-5), The Earth (grades 1-4), Knights and Castles (grades 2-7), Astronomy and Space (grades 2-7) to review. We were able to utilize 2 of the 4 products so far, The Earth and Knights and Castles. It just so happened that our March unit study was going to be weather and knights, princesses and castles so I was thrilled once again that TOS Crew review products fell right in line with our plans.
We have used A Journey Through Learning products in the past and have even reviewed them...be sure to read our review on the Preschool File Folder Games. But since I never tire of mentioning them on my blog I of course I jumped at the opportunity to share more about their fabulous supplemental products.
If you have no clue how to complete a lapbook that's fine A Journey Through Learning has several instructional videos that will help you. The lapbooks are very versatile. They are a great compliment to any curriculum and there is something for every age. The lapbooks are available in downloadable, CD or printed format...you can even purchase them pre-assembled. On each of the product pages there is a sample that you can view. As you will see on the sample page below many parts of the lapbooks are in color however I chose to print our lapbooks in black and white because the kids like coloring the pictures.
All the A Journey Through Learning lapbooks include everything you need: lapbook instructions, lapbook pieces with directions, study guides and book recommendations. There are also optional use enrichment pages that may include a book log, a biography book report page, NICK note taking page, narration forms, crafts, questions, poems, songs and more. As with any of our unit studies I always tend to go above and beyond with our extra resources and add in extra books, movies as well as videos from YouTube.
I had encouraged the kids to complete these the recommended way, utilizing a file folder... however they prefer to do our lapbooks in binders and that is what they choose to do this time around yet again. But don't worry many of the other TOS Crew members will have photos of completed lapbooks utilizing file folders so you can see the recommended method...as well as our alternative method utilizing a binder. For the binder method I 3 hole punch card stock and place it in the binder. Then we glue or tape the various lapbook pieces onto the card stock. I also 3 hole punch the study guides and place them in the back of the binder. The kids then each draw covers (one for the front and one for the back) for the binder. Many times we have a few other worksheets, notebooking pages, drawings etc that we may do with our lapbook/unit study and those will get 3 hole punched and placed into the binder as well. There are also instructions on how to store your completed lapbooks in a binder in each lapbook pack as well.
We currently complete our lapbooks as a family...however I see that changing very soon since both of the kids are going in opposite directions with their interests. When we work on our lapbooks my 5 1/2 and 7 yr old take turns cutting the pieces, writing and coloring. Most of the time my kids don't mind writing on the lapbook pieces but if they do I will let them draw pictures or dictate to me while I write. Doing the lapbooks together as a family works very well for us and we all have fun learning together!
Lapbooking and unit studies are our primary curriculum. Pretty much every subject can be covered in one lapbook/unit study. Because we follow a delight directed learning style the kids pick their interests and I find them the resources. I have several favorite companies and A Journey Through Learning is definitely one of them. Their products are reasonably priced, often have a Christian perspective and include everything you need (well expect for the crayons, scissors, glue and file folder).
Below I will describe each of these great lapbooks in further detail:
This lapbook and study guide is 42 pages of terrific information about the Earth. Children will learn about what the Earth is made of, the Earth's crust, volcanoes, rocks, land forms seasons, parts of the Earth and much more. My kids had a blast with this unit. Below in the photo is picture of several of the supplemental books we used. We also used videos on YouTube here are the links to our Earth YouTube Channel and Weather YouTube Channel.
This lapbook with study guides is 51 pages and will have you and your kids traveling back in time to the Middle Ages. The included study guide is written by Michelle Miller author of the TruthQuest History program and is written from a Christian perspective. Children will learn about the fall of Rome, the Middle Ages and of course knights, castles, peasants and more. Below in the photo is picture of several of the supplemental books we used. We also used videos on YouTube here are the links to our Medieval History YouTube channel. My son had so much fun with this lapbook he insisted on wearing his knight gear while working on it.
Gwyns review (7 yrs old):
Both of these lapbooks were lots of fun. I like to color and write on the little pieces. I also like drawing the front cover for our lapbook. We are working on another one on Australia too right now for our geography fair project. I like to pick the topic we study. The knights one was our favorite.

A moms review: I was approached by A Journey Through Learning and presented with a few lapbook options to review. I choose the Preschool File Folder Games even though I currently have a son in Kindergartner and daughter in 1st grade. I had a feeling that my very tactile son would love the Preschool File Folder Games from A Journey Through Learning and I was so was right.Actually even my daughter loved these games and they were great reinforcement for her. Guess what else there is a giveaway too so make sure you read all the way down to the bottom!
The Preschool File Folder Games include: -An Even/Odd Football Game -Even/Odd Flower Pot Game -Five Senses Game -Matching Upper/Lower Case Letters Coconut Tree Game -Elephants/Peanuts Matching Numbers Game -Color Matching Stars Game -Matching Shapes Game -Caterpillar ABC Sequence Game -Shape Sequencing Game -ABC Maze Sequence Game Now we do our lapbooks a little differently...we use binders. And file folder games are no exception. So after I downloaded the file I printed everything out and then began cutting. This is the most time consuming part but let me tell you it is totally worth it because your children will have hours of fun playing and learning. To construct the binder format I simply take a piece of card stock or scrapbook paper and 3 hole punch it. Then I take an envelope or use the game instructions to make a pocket and glue it to front of the paper. This where game pieces can be safely stored. For smaller games like the 5 Senses Game I just used one piece of paper and affixed the game board pieces on the backside.
To turn the instructions into a pocket I put a thin line of glue only on the left and right sides and the bottom. Leaving the middle portion and top unglued. This works well when there are only a few game pieces. If there are a large number of game pieces I use an envelope.
Left photo is of the front and right picture is of the back.
For larger games like the Color Matching Game I took two pieces of hole punched paper and tapped them together at the non hole punched side using wide tape. I then affixed the envelope or instruction pouch on the outside and then on the inside I affixed the game board pieces.
Top photo is front and bottom photo is the inside.
I love that my son will just pick up the binder at any given point throughout the day and start playing and learning. Sometimes he keeps the games in the binder other times he takes them out. I keep them stored on our bookcase where he can easily just grab them whenever he wants. These are also great for carschooling days or long trips.
These games are great for tactile/Kinesthetic learners and both boys and girls. I think children ages 3-6 would have fun with these games. For older children you can adjust the rules a little to make the games harder. For instance with the ABC games you can have kids say the letter sounds when they match the letters up. If you want to make the games more durable so they hold up for future or younger siblings you can laminate all the pieces. Because we will only be using these this year I decided to save my laminating pouches. And these come in both color and black and white. Children who enjoy coloring can have extra fun by coloring all the pieces.
Rowyns review (5 yrs old):
I love these games they are super duper fun. I liked the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Tree Game and the Color Game. Sometimes mommy and Gwyn play with me sometimes I play by myself.
