We had tons of fun with the Poppins Book Nook blog series last year and we will be continuing that fun all throughout 2014. This month's theme was, "Beyond Our Planet!" We started out reading just one book Space: A Nonfiction Companion to Magic Tree House: Midnight on the Moon, but while working on our project below we ended up utilizing two more. The other two books had fun exploring were The Astronomy Book and The Stargazer's Guide To The Night Sky.
Craft Project:
Here is the fun craft project we did to go along with this months theme.
Melted Crayon Planets:
So this project did not go entirely as planed, but it was still tons of fun and it does look great. It was definitely a messy project and parental supervision is needed. My children choose to do all the planets and make a giant board with them, but you can just do your favorite planet or make up your very own planet creation. You could even add glitter into the melted crayon to make a sparkly planet. Note the planets will crack a little as they dry, but it just adds to the look.
Materials:
-Crayons
-Thick cardstock
-Microwave
-Scissors
-Grater, rock, butter knife
-Paper plates
-Rubber glove
2. Peel the paper off of the crayons you wish to use and cut, grate or smash them into small pieces.
3. Scatter the crayon bits evenly onto the paper circle, that is on the paper plate. Then place the paper plate into the microwave for 15-30 seconds at a time. Check it often to see if the crayons have melted.
4. Once the crayons are melted take a glove covered hand and begin to smash and swirl the melted crayon around to cover the circle. You can also tilt the plate to achieve different looks. As you work the melted crayon you will begin to see some really cool effects and some awesome textures forming. My kids thought this part was so much fun.
5. Let the crayon harden. As mentioned above the crayon will crack some and you will need to be very gentle with them.
You can create the solar system like we did and try to mimic the 9 planets. Or you can just create a single planet to hang in the window.

We are pretty partial to Earth, although Saturn holds a certain fascination for my gal. I think it's the rings.
