A moms review:
I am a huge fan of historical fiction and living books and I would totally consider Alone Yet Not Alone a book that fits in both categories. What exactly makes a historical fiction and living book? Well a historical fiction book is a book that is set in the past. The setting is usually real and drawn from history, and often contains actual historical persons, but the main characters tend to be fictional. And a living book is a book that teaches about life, character and the human spirit. They also often teach an academic concept in a fun and engaging way.

I have been utilizing Alone Yet Not Alone as a read aloud with my 6 and 7 year old. When I read the synopsis for the book I was immediately intrigued and knew it would be a hit. The fist thing that caught my attention was that it is set in the Blue Ridge mountains of Pennsylvania. I was born and raised in Pennsylvania but sadly I never had the pleasure of learning all about the rich, exciting history that steeps in Pennsylvania. And I knew my daughter would love it because of the Native American characters.

The book is an easy read with fairly short chapters. It is 160 pages with no illustrations except for a map in the front of the introduction which shows trails, battles and massacre locations and boundaries of present day and colonial Pennsylvania. If you get the "Special Movie Edition" there are 8 pages of glossy, colored photos from the movie in the center of the book. Both of my kids loved looking at the photos and it really helped them visualize parts of the book. In the back of the book there are 10 great discussion questions. I love that this small addition was added, because it makes it very simple for parents to continue the learning after the book is completed.

The book was written by Tracy Leininger Craven and published by Zonderkidz. I was fascinated to find out in the "Author's Note" that the story of Barbara and Regina was told to Tracy Leininger Craven by her grandmother Leininger. Her grandmother stumbled upon the store when she was studying the family's genealogy. Tracy wrote her first draft of Alone Yet Not Alone when she was only nine years old. The title of the book comes from the hymn Alone Yet Not Alone that the Leininger family sings throughout the book, Alone Yet Not Alone. You can listen to the hymn here.

The publisher recommends the book for children ages 8 and up! It is a very inspiring, adventure book that teaches many important lessons and values. Children will not only learn very important historical details but they will also learn about faith, love, miracles, survival and that God is always with us no matter what. We are not quiet finished with the book yet but it is definitely a family favorite and one will we certainly read over and over again!

Alone Yet Not Alone synopsis:
The story takes place in the Autumn of 1755. Settled in the Blue Mountains of Pennsylvania, deep within America's new frontier, the Leininger family celebrates the blessings of a beautiful homestead and bountiful harvest. That is, until tragedy strikes with the beginning of the French and Indian War and the devastating raid known as the Penn's Creek Massacre.

The lives of this simple, God-fearing family are forever altered when Barbara and Regina, two young sisters, are carried away by the Delaware tribe. Driven by their faith in God and the powerful bonds of family, Barbara and Regina hold firmly to the belief that they are never alone, even in their darkest hour, and that they will be reunited again.

Rich in historical details, Alone Yet Not Alone is an inspirational, true story of a family caught in the cross fire of the French and Indian War.

About the author:
Tracy Leininger Craven loves history and retelling real-life stories in her historical fiction books. She also loves spending her free time in the great outdoors with her husband David and their four children.

Hi Kathy,

I feel like I have seen the preview for this or something somewhere but I can't place it. Nonetheless, we are historical fiction junkies- it is so much easier to discuss historical events with your children while you are reading one to them. Thank you so much for this great giveaway, I look forward to reading this book with my little ones very soon.

Thanks again,

Victoria
