R is for Reading

R is the letter this week for the ABC's of homeschooling meme. R is for Reading!

Last week we started our first year of homeschool and it has been amazing watching my children learn. This year Gwyn will be learning to read. She is very eager to learn and tries to read signs, books, etc so I think it is safe to say she is ready. The first book she is learning to read is Fun with Phonics - Fat Cat. It uses simple words focusing on short A - like fat, cat, mat, bat, pat, hat, sat and rat. I made flash cards using index cards and handwriting worksheets. I used spellingcity to create FREE worksheets like wordfinds, matching and fill in the missing letter. I am also planning a few fun activities for her this week using the words.

In conjunction with the short A words she also will be learning a few sight words like is, a, he, on, his, her, one, day, get, etc.

I cannot wait to hear her read her first book! On a side note Rowyn wrote his first letter A, on our first day of school talk about a proud mommy moment!

So exciting! I loved teaching my kids to read. It is my favorite thing EVER because seeing the lights come on when they "get it" is SO COOL. You should look at Bob Books. They are short, simple books that come in sets, in three levels. Short enough not to be overwhelming, but long enough that they really feel like to accomplished something when they finish them! :) Have fun!
