We had tons of fun with the Poppins Book Nook blog series last year and we will be continuing that fun all throughout 2015. This month's theme was, "Poetry" Keep reading to learn more about the book we read, the craft we made and to grab your FREE poetry journal page. There is also a giveaway is at the end of the post! Books:
This month we read a book called Read A Rhyme, Write A Rhyme. This 32 page hardback book is a compilation of poems by well-known poets. It is broken into different categories which include cows, bugs, food, friends, birthdays and more. But our favorite part of the book are the "poemstarts," which encourage children to create their own poems. The "poemstarts," offer suggestions for various ways children can continue the poem. Jack Prelutsky the author has been credited with making poetry fun for children to read. Now he is making poetry fun for children to write!

Craft:
My daughter loves acrostic poems so we decided to not only create an acrostic poem but also a craft to go along with it. The theme WORMS!

An acrostic poem is a very fun, easy poem for kids to create. Each acrostic poem has a topic idea running down the left side of the poem. Each letter in the topic word has a new thought that runs off the side from left to right and is relevant to the topic word.

Supplies:
  • Green cardstock or file folder
  • Pink, red or brown construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Markers or crayons

Instructions:
  1. Fold the green cardstock or file folder in half, then fold in the bottom two sides to make it stand up. Tape the bottoms together.
  2. Cut 4 slits in the green cardstock near the bottom.
  3. Cut a worm out of the pink, red or brown construction paper. Draw the segments, eyes and mouth on with a marker or crayon. Slide the worm through the slits.
  4. Glue a piece of writing paper onto the green cardstock. You can print a sheet of writing paper here.
  5. Create a poem about worms and write it on the writing paper.
  6. Draw some flowers, plants and trees around the writing paper with markers or crayons.

Free Poetry Journal Page:
Here is the Poetry Journal Page that we used for this months theme. It is also great for National Poetry Month in April! Download your copy here or click the picture below.
