Great For God Review And Twitter Party Reminder

For about the last week I have been reading a really good book called Great for God – Missionaries Who Changed the World by David Shibley. I hardly ever get to read books for myself. Because of lack of time or because I am just too busy reading kids books. But I found this book very easy to read because it is written in a short story format (totally my favorite style of writing). I have been able to read 1-2 of the missionary biographies each night before I go to bed. I have been reading the ebook version on my phone using the Kindle app. They only take me about 10-15 minutes to read. These stories are very inspiring, sad and amazing. When I was a child I loved writing to our church missionaries and reading the stories they would tell me when they replied back. Reading this book brought back those memories from my childhood. I actually think I still have many of those letters still tucked away in my keepsake box. This would be a great book to read to older children especially those with a heart for the missions field.

I have not completed the entire book yet but definitely plan to. So far my favorite biography is of Amy Carmichael. This amazing woman formed the Dohnavur Fellowship and helped rescue young girls who were forced into temple prostitution. By 1913 the fellowship had rescued 130 children whom they housed and educated. She was accused of kidnapping. Natives hated her and missionaries envied her. I just love this quote that came from one of Amy's many books, "Give me the love that leads the way, The faith that nothing can dismay, The hope no disappointments tire. The passions that will burn like fire. Let me not stoop to be clod; Make  me Thy fuel, Flame of God."

This book was filled with many fabulous quotes that we could all learn a lesson from and live by. Here are a few others I just had to share with you:

-"The secret in the 400m is that I run the first 200m as fast as I can. Then, for the lst 200m, with God's help I run faster." Eric Liddell

-"Missions involvement isn't sentimental philanthropy. It's just an honest man paying his debt." Warren Shibley

There were also some great scripture references:

-"I will speak of Your testimonies also before the kings, and will not be ashamed." Ps 119:46

And my ultimate favorite scripture probably because its the first one I ever memorized.

-"For God so love the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting lift." John 3:16

I always knew that the missions field was big in South America and Africa but never realized how big it was in India and other Asian countries. I guess we all learn something new everyday.

More about the book:
This book highlights 23 missionaries who boldly lived for God and not themselves. With bold faith, obedience to God, and love for others, missionaries attempt great things for God. Great for God: Missionaries Who Changed the World shares the biographies of twenty three missionaries. Each chapter highlights the amazing truths of God’s power at work through the lives of those willing to live for the applause of heaven. Learn from the legacy of:

  • David Livingstone
  • Lottie Moon
  • Jim Elliot
  • Eric Liddell
  • Bill Bright and 18 others

Teachers will find it a powerful supplement to world history and religious studies. It only takes one courageous life in Christ to bring hope to millions! It could be yours.
