Reading Eggs Review

A moms review:
Well we have been using Reading Eggs since the beginning of February and both Rowyn and Gwyn LOVE it. They actually beg to play Reading Eggs just about every day (yup they are taking over my laptop and even Daddy's computer so they can be on at the same time). Gwyn even played on it for over 2 hrs one day. The program uses wonderful animations, activities and reward games to keep children motivated. Gwyn who is 6 yrs old was already reading a little before starting Reading Eggs but Rowyn who is 4 yrs old was not reading at all. I am so happy to announce that my 4 1/2 yr old is actually reading a few words now. Now if you read my blog you know I don't purchase many curriculum's and the majority of what we use is FREE. But...Reading Eggs was offering a 40% off coupon during a  Facebook party so I just had to take advantage. I decided to get the 1 year membership and we will now have access to this wonderful program until next summer. I just knew that once our trial period ran out both kids would be so disappointed if they could no longer get on to play. This program is so easy to use, we didn't read any instructions or do any tutorials prior to starting. Gwyn just hopped on and started the lessons right away. Each lesson has audio instructions so the children know exactly what they need to do to complete it. So if you have more than one child this program will allow you to divide up your time more easily. While one is doing some reading with Reading Eggs you can work one on one with another child.

When your children start the program, they will complete a placement quiz to ensure they are starting at the correct reading level. So if they already are reading some they won't get frustrated by back tracking and covering skills they've already mastered. Reading Eggs is a safe website where your child can spend time learning in a safe and fun online environment which is advertisement free.  Every time your child exits the program their lesson progress is saved and they will start back at the spot the left off at.

As children progress through their lessons they earn golden eggs as rewards. They can use these eggs to buy reward games and other items. After 10 lessons children complete a mastery quiz before progressing to the next map. Gwyn was so excited when she passed her first quiz. She got a 90% and a reading quiz award ribbon.

In the Reading Eggs World, children have their own house to decorate, a big shop and an avatar that can walk and travel to many new destinations on Reggie’s bus. Children are able to choose their own adventure from a wide range of activities and places to go. My kids loved creating their avatars Gwyns is the cat of course, aren't they cute? My kids also love the playroom which they can do lots of fun activities in like build a pizza, color, play instruments, put puzzles together and more.

After each lesson children are also rewarded with a new Reading Eggs critter to add to their zoo. This collection will continue to grow with the more reading lessons they complete. My kids love the critters and so do I (they are so darn cute). The Reading Eggs critters also have critter cards which have silly phonics facts about the critter.

I love that Reading Eggs is always growing and developing new lessons and features. Reading Eggs now has 120 big lessons. These 120 lessons are perfect for 4 to 7 year olds who are learning to read. Recently they just added STORYLANDS Clinker Castle focuses which will focus on building reading fluency and comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, and a range of writing skills including grammar and punctuation.

This is a screen shot of the dashboard.

Gwyns review (6 yrs old):

I think its really great for kids to learn and it gives them knowledge. Its really fun and you get to go into a house where there is painting and stuff. And you have to do really good on the level and if you get it wrong you have to do again and if you get them all right you get to move onto the next level. I love reading eggs and I am a homeschooler and mommy signed me up for reading eggs. Every kid who is homeschooled must try this out. Its cool. If a lesson is hard you may have to ask your mom for help.

Details from the Reading Eggs Website:
Reading Eggs feels that learning to read is an important skill that all children need to learn (couldn't agree more). It’s such a fundamental skill that we wanted to make a learning to read site that would make a real difference. And we wanted to make it fun and enjoyable too (which it is)!

Reading Eggs supports each child’s learning by offering individual, one-on-one lessons. These online lessons allow your child to progress at their own rate. The program focuses on a core reading curriculum of phonics and sight words using skills and strategies essential for sustained reading success.

Reading Eggs is as easy as 1,2,3:

Your child will:
1 – LearnLearn essential reading skills by completing online lessons.
All lessons can be repeated as many times as needed. Repeating lessons is a good way for children to build long term memory and reinforce skills.

2 – ReadRead books online and at home.
Reading Eggs book packs make reading even more fun with real books, progress posters and stickers.

3 – Write
Complete writing activities in Reading Eggs Activity Books.
Reading Eggs Activity Books are a great way to extend reading into writing and they’re great fun too!

There are two programs one for ages 3-7 Reading Eggs and one for ages 7-13 Reading Eggspress. So when your child completes all the Reading Eggs lessons they can move onto Eggspress. Eggspress helps children learn to comprehend what they are reading. The 200 comprehension lessons within ABC Reading Eggspress focus on building a wide range of somprehension strategies. The lessons clearly explain each concept using memorable animations that help children understand such concepts as cause and effect, making connections, main idea, inference, figure of speech, audience, making judgements and drawing conclusions.

Reading Eggs also has book packs which are a great way to access the program. Each Reading Eggs book pack comes with 10 reading books and an access code that opens a 14 day subscription to the online program. The book packs also contain a Progress map with stickers. After each lesson, you can add stickers to the map as a reward and to mark progress. This great feature adds to the rewarding experience and improves motivation.

A Perfect Pet For Peyton Review and Giveaway

You may have heard me speak a little bit about The 5 Love Languages and The 5 Love Languages of Children before on my blog (stayed tuned for a review and giveaway for The 5 Love Languages of Children). Well Gary Chapman has done it again!!! But this time he has created a children's book that will help your children to discover their love language.

Synopsis:
This wonderfully imaginative children’s hardcover book by bestselling authors Gary Chapman and Rick Osborne, featuring four-color illustrations (with hidden details!) by Wilson Williams, Jr., will help children learn the importance of love. Based on Gary’s highly successful The 5 Love Languages®, A Perfect Pet for Peyton tells an entertaining and playful story of five children who each, with the help of Mr. Chapman and the unique pets at his special emporium, discover their own personal love language. Children and parents alike will experience firsthand the power of the love languages as they cuddle up and spend precious time together reading this book over and over again.
*Free interactive app with in-book experience COMING SOON to the Apple App Store.

A moms review:
As soon as A Perfect Pet for Peyton arrived the kids were excited and begged for me to read it to them... and that is just what I did. The illustrations are absolutely wonderful and my kids loved all of the animals throughout the book (if a book has animals they are hooked). The book is about Peyton and Penny who are twins celebrating their birthday. After numerous hints their parents host their birthday party at Mr. Chapman's Perfect Pet Emporium (if this place really existed we would so be there). It is their hope that they will find their perfect pets at the emporium. Several friends join them and find out that they too will also be finding their perfect pets. Throughout the day the kids explore the pets in the various attractions which consist of reptiles, sea, cats/dogs, jungle, barnyard/petting zoo and more.

Throughout the story small clues are dropped that will help your kids start to figure out what Peyton, Penny and each of their friends love languages is. At the end Mr. Chapman uses these clues to match the kids with their pets.

The Five Love Languages are:
  • Quality Time
  • Words of Affirmation
  • Gifts
  • Physical Touch
  • Acts of Service

For example: Sofia, loves to pet the animals, hold her friends hands and loves giving all kinds of hugs. She was paired with Snuggles the rabbit. Physical Touch is definitely our daughter Gwyns love language and she actually has a cat named Pixiedust who will only Gwyn hug and snuggle her.

I love interactive books that get the kids involved and A Perfect Pet for Peyton does that too. On each page of the book there is a hidden insect. My kids just loved searching for them as I was reading and they found every single one. There are also animal scavenger hunts on the pages where the twins and their friends are exploring the emporium attractions.

As a bonus, in the back of the book there is a quiz for kids to take with their parents to find out what their love language is. It is recommended that you read the book several times, talking with them about it and discovering which characters and perfect pet pals they are drawn too. Also observe which characters they mimic. Once you think you narrowed it down to at least two its time to ask your child the seven questions to find out which one matches best. You want to be careful to not place too much emphasis on which language is theirs because you want to guide them to learn and discover their love languages for themselves.

This is definitely a book we will be reading a lot since this year one of our primary goals is working on character, virtues and behavior. Since I already knew about the 5 love languages and already know what each of their primary love languages are I can tell you that speaking your childs love language will result in better behavior. Believe me knowing what your spouse and childs love language is will change your lives and relationships.

On Sunday the kids picked up the book by themselves and were looking at the pictures and trying to  find the insects again.

Gwyns review (6 yrs old):

My favorite part of the book was at the end where Pennys perfect pet rides around the house on Peytons perfect pet. I also like the cute ferret.

Rowyns review (4 yrs old):
My favorite part was looking for the bugs.

Celebrating Easter and National Library Month With Rose Art

Did you know that March is National Craft Month? I'll admit I didn't and our family is big into arts and crafts. Each week this month we shared a craft project how to using Rose Art products. If you missed them you can click here to view the past craft posts. Sadly this is the last week for National Craft Month...but that doesn't mean you need to stop crafting. We do at least 3 craft projects a week. It's a great way to build your kids imagination, creativity and self confidence. Crafting is also a great educational tool and helps to build motor and thinking skills. Thanks to everyone who has been linking up and sharing your wonderful craft projects.

This week we decided to share two crafts. One is a fun and easy Easter craft and the other is a pencil holder which we will be giving to the librarians at our local library next month for National Library Week which is in April 8th-11th.

Materials we used for pencil holder craft:
-Paper Plate
-Scrapbook or Construction Paper
-Foam Stickers (we used Easter ones)
-Pom Poms
-Rose Art Glitter Magic Markers
-Rose Art Stampers
-Rose Art Twist Up Crayons
-White School Glue

Instructions:
1.)
Cut semi circle out of the center of the paper plate. Then glue this piece onto the back of the paper plate to form a small pocket to hold the Easter eggs.

2.) Cut out several eggs from scrapbook or construction paper. Then have the kids decorate their baskets and eggs. We used pom poms, foam stickers, twist up crayons, stampers and the kids favorite glitter magic markers. They absolutely love the glitter magic markers from Rose Art and truth be told so do I. Stick the eggs into the pouch after they are decorated.

3.)
Told you it was quick, easy and fun. Wash up and show off your finished project.

Remember I told you I love to use recyclables for our crafts? Well this project is so easy and uses an empty tin can. These make great gifts for teachers, librarians, grandma, friends, etc.

Materials we used for pencil holder craft:
-Tin Can
-Scrapbook or Construction Paper
-Ribbon
-Foam Stickers
-Pom Poms
-Rose Art Glitter Magic Markers
-White School Glue
-Low Temp Hot Glue Gun

Instructions:
1.) Cut a piece of paper to fit around the tin can you chose. Wrap the paper around the can and use hot glue to glue the two ends together at the back of the can.

2.) Decorate your covered can using ribbon, pom poms, foam stickers, markers etc. Gwyn chose to make a little tag for hers that says, "I love the library." You can also find a nice quote or saying to write or print to add to the can.

3.) Add some pens, pencils, candy, post its notes, etc to the pencil holder. Wash up and give your finished project to someone as a gift.

A week in the life of homeschoolers - Week 34 & Seussy Saturday Link Up - Week 4

Welcome to the Seussy Saturday Link Up. As you may know we are going crazy with Dr. Seuss this month for our homeschool unit. We will be reading EVERY single one of his books and doing worksheets,  lapbooks, crafts, fun food and more. I know there are a bunch of link ups going on for Dr. Seuss but this one will be a little different because it will last all month. So if you are having a Seusstactular time with Dr. Seuss this month be sure to link up.

Below is the button if you want to join in the fun. Just link up a post that has to do with Dr. Seuss. And I would love it if you put the button either in the post or on your sidebar if your participating.

So here is what A Week In Life Of A Seussy Homeschool looks like.

Saturday night the kids arrived home from their sleepover to find their Leprechaun traps empty. They didn't catch that sneaky little guy this year but he did leave them each 3 chocolate gold coins. Sunday we had fun with our Spring craft and made some cute butterflys. If you haven't seen my National Craft Month With Rose Art post be sure to check it out here

Monday we had a super busy day. First Gwyn had American Girl club with our homeschool group where she made another woven place mat which went along great with the 1st Kaya book. Then we headed to Rowyn's speech appointment. Afterwards we ran to the library to return some books and get our books for our April unit study which will be on South America, Chimpanzees and other primates. Then it was for some Seussy fun. We read Oh say can you seed and The Bippolo Seed and other stories. And then we planted our balcony gardens. We also examined some carpenter bees and discussed pollen (which is coating all of GA right now, my green car has turned yellow). And then Gwyn had her first official soccer practice.

Tuesday we celebrated Spring. We did a first day of Spring nature study. Discussed carpenter bees again (they are surrounding our front porch and balcony). Then the kids made their lunches, peanut butter and jelly their favorite. Afterwards we headed to Old Roswell Mill with the Adventurez in Child Rearing family. Even though we live about 2-3 miles from this wonderful place we have never been there. But after spending over 5 hrs there I can tell you we will be going back a lot more. This place is amazing. We covered History, Science, PE, Art, Phonics, Math and more on this one field trip.

Wednesday was an errand day with daddy but we did manage to sneak in a field trip at Petco. We played Mouse Trap and the kids did some Read Eggs (I cannot wait to share our review about this program with you). The kids also watched some quality educational shows on the Roku......The 3 Stooges. Rowyn helped me make our meatball sandwich dinner and bake a loaf of Tastefully Simple Beer Bread. Each kid also made their snack which went along great with the Dr Seuss Tooth book.

Thursday we hung out with the homeschool group and went to a great place in Acworth GA called DACKids. This facility has a pirate theme and features wooden forts, a large sand pit, compressed air cannons that shoot foam balls, inflatables, playhouses and slides. The staff is very nice and the facility was very clean. Unlike so many play centers DACKids has a great security procedure in place as well. The adult who registers with the child/children on arrival MUST be present upon departing; and must show their corresponding security wristbands. I also loved how inexpensive it was. We got a great deal through Groupon and got a 5 session pass for $18! Their normal fees are $7.99 per child and $4.99 for two and under. Afterwards we went to Chilis for lunch there were 5 homeschool moms and 18 kids. We were out numbered...but you would have been amazed at well behaved the 17 kids under the age of 12 were...I know we were. They were so polite, sat in their chairs, ate their food and talked among themselves. Gwyn even made a new friend.

Friday I drove the kids to Mommom's (aka Grandma's) for their sleepover. And I headed to Apologia Live (more to come on that in another blog post).

I hope you had a great month learning with Dr. Seuss. I will not be doing a link up this Saturday but we are still working on some Dr. Seuss activities and finishing up the books this week. I really didn't get in as many crafts and activities as I wanted too because of attending a convention and retreat this month....but we did have lots of fun with Dr. Seuss and the kids learned a lot about imagination, adjectives and rhyming.

March 3 in 30 - Week 3

Well now I am blaming my lack of progress on Apologia Live. I think some of my goals will need to be carried over to next month.

March Goals:

1. Get reviews that need to be done written and scheduled - Nope no progress made.

2. Remember to visit and thank those that have linked up at FreeBEE Fridays - I really slacked the last two weeks on this one too.

3. Spring clean and organize -  Nope no organizing done. Even though I am going to get 3 bookcases tomorrow from a friend and that will greatly help my organizing at least in the school room.

Any encouraging words or suggestions are always appreciated!

Time For Learning Review Coming Soon....

Over the next 30 days, I will be reviewing Time4Learning's online education program. It can be used as a homeschool curriculum, an afterschool tutorial or for summer learning. My opinion will be entirely my own, so be sure to come back and read about my experience. I also wanted to let you know that you can write your own curriculum review, too!

Celebrating Spring With Rose Art

Did you know that March is National Craft Month? I'll admit I didn't and our family is big into arts and crafts. So for the next 3 weeks I will be sharing a craft project along with a how to. And we will be using a lot of Rose Art products.

Since today is the first day of Spring we decided to do a fun butterfly craft.

Materials we used:
-White Paper
-Clothes Pin
-Tissue Paper
-Jewels
-Pom Poms
-Wiggle Eyes
-Rose Art Glitter Magic Markers
-Rose Art Twist Up Crayons
-White School Glue
-Low Temp Hot Glue Gun

Instructions:
1.)
Fold a piece of white paper in half and draw a heart with the bottom being flat along the fold. Cut along the lines and then open the paper. This will make the butterfly's wings.

2.) Decorate the butterfly wings. We used tissue paper, jewels, twist up crayons and glitter magic markers. The glitter magic markers from Rose Art are AWESOME. My kids absolutely loved them. They are easy to write and draw with, super sparkly and washable. I love them because they are much cleaner than regular glitter and provide a similar effect.

3.)
Glue a clothes pin onto the center of the wings. Then add some pom poms onto the clothes pin. My kids choose different colors and then used a big pom pom for the head. Add some wiggle eyes and antennae using a pipe cleaner. Gwyn decided her butterfly needed needed a tongue and legs as well so she added those using pipe cleaners. We used the low temp glue gun to adhere all of these parts.

4.) The fun thing about this craft is that your completed butterfly can clip onto things like a curtain or hold a little sign which Gwyn decided to make. Her sign says, "Welcome Spring."

5.) Wash up and show off your finished project.

Fuzzy Poster Review:

I would like to share another product we received in our box of goodies. A Sun and Moon Fuzzy Poster. Gwyn immediately claimed this. She had a blast coloring in the poster and it is now hanging on her bedroom wall. This kit comes with the poster and a set of washable markers. The nice thing is that even if your child is not great at staying in the lines it doesn't matter because the black velvet will hide mistakes. These vary in price and range anywhere from $2.40-$7.98. They also come in different sizes.

A week in the life of homeschoolers - Week 33, Seussy Saturday Link Up - Week 3 & FreeBEE Friday Link Up

Well both my FreeBEE Friday and Seussy Saturday posts are being put up late this week because I was having fun with my blogger friends at the Teach Them Diligently convention in South Carolina on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Don't worry I will be sharing more about the Convention this week. So I am combining them both in this post along with our week in the life of homeschoolers.

So here is what our week in the life of homeschoolers looked like. We actually didn't get any Dr. Seuss activities done because we only had 3 days to do homeschool and we were busy running errands and squeezing in a field trip during those three days. So here is what we managed to get done.

Sunday we made a cute St. Patricks Day craft if you missed it check it out here. Monday Rowyn had speech therapy, which is still going very well. Afterwards we all got hair cuts and then Gwyn had her first soccer practice. But due to the rain it ended up just being a team orientation. She was so bummed so after she met her coach and team mates I took Gwyn and Rowyn to the field and we kicked the ball around in the rain. Tuesday we went to Tellus Museum with some of our homeschool group friends. If you live in GA and have never visited the museum you must do so or if you ever visit GA add it to your list of must do activities. The gem panning and fossil digging are always a BIG hit. Afterwards we went to the grocery store. On Wednesday we made our posters for Legoland with some homeschool group friends. Afterwards we went to visit my parents and pick up the van I was using to drive to South Carolina. Then I dropped the kids off at my friends house. She was kind enough to watch them for the 3 days I was gone so that they would be able to experience an awesome adventure on Friday. The kids were very excited to have a sleepover with their friends. Later that night I finally got to meet my wonderful online friend Kelli from Adventurez in Child Rearing. On Friday the kids along with 200 other homeschooled kids got to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for the NEW Legoland at Phipps Plaza in Atlanta. They couldn't wait to tell me all about and thankfully some of my wonderful friends took pictures for me. Saturday they went to the Big Machine Festival with their friends. I don't have any pictures yet to share but they had a blast. They got to play in an ambulance, bulldozer and firetruck. And Gwyn was thrilled that she got to pet a police horse.

Welcome to the Seussy Saturday Link Up. As you may know we are going crazy with Dr. Seuss this monh for our homeschool unit.
